Albert Lea, MN--Fisher's Fine Jewelers, a cornerstone business in downtown Albert Lea, will close in June 2024 as owners Larry and Sandra Fisher retire.

The store, initially opened in 1987 in the historic Bessesen Building, moved to the corner of William Street and Broadway in 1994 to accommodate growth.

A report in Albert Lea Tribune stated that Larry Fisher, inspired by his parents' own jewelry shop, pursued a gemology and jewelry technology career in Paris, Texas, before settling in Albert Lea.

Larry noted in the report that despite the rise of online shopping, their personalized service retained a loyal customer base.

"That's why I feel independent jewelers, family-owned stores will always survive because people like to see the product and they like to know the person that is fixing their ring," Fisher said, per the report.

Over the years, the business fluctuated between employing just the couple to hiring up to seven staff members. The Fishers have praised the community for its support and credited their team for the store's longevity. Attempts to sell the business were unsuccessful, leading to a decision to sell only the building.

The Fishers plan to relocate to Tennessee, attracted by the region's outdoor activities. As they prepare to close the store in June, they will host a retirement sale starting Monday, offering 20% to 65% discounts.
