A SECURITY TIP FOR RETAIL JEWELERS: MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT LO-JACKED September 05, 2012 (0 comments)
Merrick, NY--The Centurion Newsletter received this email warning from David Geller of JewelerProfit, with a good security tip for all retail jewelry store owners regarding the use of a GPS tracking device (lojack) to track their movements. Here is his warning:
“A jeweler with a brick and mortar store located in the northern suburbs of [Chicago] Illinois discovered a GPS tracking device attached to his car. The jeweler noticed his tire was low on air. When he went to inspect the tire, he noticed a small device attached underneath his car near his rear tire. When his children removed the device, they saw a USB port on it. After connecting it to their computer, they discovered the device had been tracking the jeweler’s vehicle location for four or five days. Police are investigating the incident and no more information is available at this time.
GPS devices are available at any major electronics retailer. These devices (one is shown at left) can track and monitor you live and in real time with any Internet connection or cell phone.
Precautions:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Always check to see if you are being followed.
- Periodically, use a hand-held makeup mirror to check the tire well areas, under the trunk, below the hood, and any area of your car where it would be easy to attach something. (The mirror may help if you don’t want to get down on the ground to inspect these areas.)
- Try not to travel with any high value objects.
- Check your car for any signs of tampering. If you are suspicious of a set up, call police to come to your location.”
