Providence, RI--Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Pamela Love has filed a lawsuit against Alex and Ani, claiming the company owes her $6 million in unpaid royalties and more than $200,000 in consulting fees, according to a report by The Boston Globe.

Per the report, Love was hired in 2023 as Alex and Ani’s creative director as part of the company’s rebranding efforts. The agreement included a monthly salary of nearly $21,000 plus royalties. However, the lawsuit states that Alex and Ani terminated the contract on March 12, 2024, citing the company’s financial instability. Love had already designed jewelry pieces that went into production and were later sold, according to the suit.
The Boston Globe noted that Love initiated arbitration in 2024 to recover the unpaid amount, during which Alex and Ani’s legal representatives acknowledged the company was seeking a way to pay her. The arbitrator, former Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Katherine Chilton, determined that the company’s only justification for nonpayment was its financial distress, further noting that its assets had been transferred to a third party.
Alex and Ani, founded in 2004 in Cranston, RI, was once a thriving brand known for its expandable wire charm bracelets, selling 10 million pieces annually by 2014. However, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2021 following financial and legal struggles, including lawsuits, executive turnover, and a ransomware attack. As of September 2021, control of the company was largely handed over to its creditors.
The Boston Globe reported that Alex and Ani is now majority-owned by Lion Capital, a London-based private equity firm, while celebrity attorney Mark Geragos controls the remaining 35% through The Bathing Club LLC. Love’s lawsuit also alleges that Alex and Ani executives engaged in a long-term effort to move company assets, making it more difficult for creditors to collect.
According to the Boston Globe, an arbitration declaration by independent board member Larry Meyer indicated that he was overseeing “the orderly shutdown of the company.” However, as of this week, Alex and Ani’s online operations remain active.
