Alfred W. ‘Fred’ DeScenza, Renowned Diamond Industry Leader, Dies at 95 April 10, 2024 (0 comments)

Beverly, MA--Alfred W. "Fred" DeScenza, esteemed owner and former president of DeScenza Diamonds, died on April 1, at age 95, surrounded by his family, including his wife of 72 years, Shirley Tyler DeScenza.

Born on June 13, 1928, in Medford, MA, Fred DeScenza's journey from a childhood spent in Winthrop to a respected Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America exemplifies his dedication to his craft and the growth of his family's business. His leadership expanded DeScenza Diamonds, establishing it as a cornerstone in the diamond industry alongside his father, Alfred F. DeScenza, and brother-in-law, Hugh MacIsaac.

Fred was celebrated for his integrity, loyalty, and kindness within the diamond industry, holding memberships in several prestigious organizations, including the Gemological Institute of America, the Diamond Dealers Club of NY, and the DeBeers U.S. Carat Club. His interests outside of work were diverse, encompassing skiing, gardening, boat building, and notably, the support of Farmsteads of New England, a nonprofit aiding individuals with developmental disabilities, founded by his daughter Deborah.

His legacy includes his significant contributions to the diamond industry and a life rich in personal achievements and community involvement.

He leaves behind his wife, Shirley; children Sheryl DeScenza Tacy, Deborah DeScenza, Diane DeScenza Herth, Alison DeScenza Hodgman, A. Tyler DeScenza; and a large family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ethel M. DeScenza and Doris (DeScenza) MacIsaac.

A Funeral Mass for Fred DeScenza is scheduled for April 8 at St. John the Baptist in Essex, with contributions in lieu of flowers directed to Farmsteads of New England.
