Montreal, Canada--Montreal-based jewelry brand Birks is commemorating 145 years since its founding in 1879. Henry Birks opened the company’s first store on Saint James Street in Montreal, later expanding nationwide alongside the construction of Canada’s transcontinental railway, according to The Vancouver Sun. By the mid-20th century, Birks had established itself as a national retailer with locations in cities including Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.

Initially a leading North American silverware manufacturer, Birks has shifted its focus to gold, gemstones, and fine jewelry. Jean-Christophe Bédos, CEO of Birks Group, told The Vancouver Sun that while silverware is no longer central to the business, select sterling silver jewelry remains part of the product line.

The company’s historical ties to British royalty have been a key part of its legacy. In 1935, Birks received a Royal Warrant, making it an official supplier to the Royal Family. While the warrant is no longer active, it reinforced Birks’ position in the luxury market.

In recent years, in-house collections such as Bee Chic and Snowflake have been launched, inspired by Canadian landscapes. The company’s modern designs have been worn by figures like Meghan Markle and Kelly Clarkson, The Vancouver Sun reported.

Currently operating 25 stores across Canada, Birks plans to focus on profitable locations, such as Toronto’s Yorkdale and Montreal’s Royalmount, while closing underperforming outlets. The company’s pricing strategy targets a “sweet spot” between $3,000 and $5,000, according to Bédos.

Birks is also looking ahead to its 150th anniversary, with plans for a significant celebration in five years, Bédos told The Vancouver Sun.
