Apple Watch Sellout Rivals Lilly At Target Mayhem

Cupertino, CA—More proof that when something has an allure of scarcity, consumers want it that much more: both the Apple Watch and the Lilly Pulitzer collection for Target were instant sellouts. The Apple watch went on sale April 24, and according to reports, all models in the United States sold out within 24 hours. This article explains why luxury jewelers need to keep an eye on the watch’s sales.

“Although nobody believes the watch was really out of stock, the brand is becoming especially adept at maintaining the illusion of scarcity. Already, Apple has sold more watches in 24 hours than Android has in an entire year,” said Scott Galloway, president of L2 Thinktank, which tracks digital marketing in the luxury market. “The Apple Watch is a wrist-size iPhone, meaning no other digital wristband has a chance,” he added.

The Target collaboration with Palm Beach-inspired brand Lilly Pulitzer, meanwhile, sold out within 10 minutes of stores’ opening, with shoppers waiting in lines 500 deep for hours until the doors opened. The Target website crashed almost as soon as the items went on sale in the wee hours of April 19.
