Beverly Hills, CA—Barely has the New Year’s Eve confetti been cleared, and the 2015 awards season is off to a resounding start, beginning with the People’s Choice Awards on January 7, progressing to the Golden Globe Awards on January 11, and culminating with the Oscars at the end of next month—with lots more awards, events, and parties in between.

The stars were out in force, and many familiar names jewelers know—and sell—were represented on the red carpet. Diamonds, of course, are the leading go-to for red-carpet dressing, but there were plenty of glamorous colored gems to be seen as well. (At left, singer Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum wears Royal Jewelry and Sylvie Collection at the People's Choice Awards.)

The ears have it this year. While certainly there were stars that donned spectacular necklaces, the predominant focus was on the ear, where drop earrings reign. Anyone who tries to tell you that chandelier earrings are out is living under a rock: they’re as out as blue jeans are, which is to say never. The width, the number of tiers, and the materials may change, but the basic concept? They’re classic. Thus ends that debate, once and for all.

A look to take note of from the Golden Globes was jewelry in the hair—most notably Kiera Knightley’s diamond feather from Chanel. Emma Stone’s simple silver barrette didn’t seem to have much purpose other than to be there, but this could kick off a trend for bejeweling one’s tresses. For jewelers, it means either figuring out a way to (temporarily) convert a major piece into something that will stay in the hair, or possibly finding a category where you can add some, dare we say it, faux bijoux to your store to attract young women who can later become customers for your real merchandise.

A number of other stars wore Doves to the People’s Choice Awards, including the host, Anna Faris, who wore 18k white gold diamond ear crawlers.
