New York, NY--De Beers Group announced it will begin listing the country of origin for all newly registered rough diamonds above 1.25 carats (equivalent to 0.5 carats in polished form) on its Tracr platform starting in 2025. This move aligns with new G7 import rules, which require greater transparency in the diamond trade.

The announcement was made at the “Spotlight on Diamonds” event in Paris, where De Beers also shared updates on its "Origins strategy" and sustainability initiatives.

CEO Al Cook stated that advancements in Tracr’s technology now allow specific country-of-origin tracking, reflecting customer demand for clearer information on the source and impact of diamonds.

Previously, Tracr provided only general “DTC” origin data, indicating that diamonds were sourced from De Beers’ operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia, or South Africa. This aggregated approach blended similar diamonds from different regions.

However, new scanning technology and AI-powered algorithms now allow Tracr to identify the exact source country.

The Tracr platform aims to expand its reach across the diamond supply chain, increasing the volume of traceable diamonds. This change is part of De Beers’ broader efforts to meet regulatory standards and improve accountability in diamond sourcing.
