According to an article in Only Natural Diamonds, the evil eye (mati in Greek) dates back more than 5,000 years, with early references appearing in 6th-century BCE Greek texts. Traditionally crafted from blue and white glass, it was believed to guard against envy and misfortune. Over time, the talisman spread across cultures from Greece and Turkey to the Middle East and North Africa.

The report noted that designers such as Ileana Makri, Anita Ko, Sydney Evan, Yannis Sergakis, ITA Jewelry, and Jacquie Aiche are among those incorporating diamond-set versions into their collections. Greek-born jeweler Makri, who has worked with the symbol since founding her brand in 1998, described the evil eye as a "quasi-universal symbol for protection" and emphasized its cultural and personal resonance.
