According to the update, the scale measures how easily a gem can be scratched, ranking minerals from 1 (soft) to 10 (diamond-hard).

The post noted that stones rated higher on the scale—such as diamonds, sapphires, and rubies—are durable enough for daily wear and heirloom pieces.

Mid-range stones like topaz, garnet, and tourmaline can withstand regular use with care, while softer gems such as opals, pearls, and tanzanite are better suited for occasional wear to avoid surface damage.

As per the guide, understanding the hardness scale helps buyers choose jewelry that fits their lifestyle, whether it's a diamond designed to last a lifetime or a more delicate gem reserved for special occasions.
