New York, NY--An 18th-century diamond négligé necklace featuring approximately 300 carats of Golconda diamonds was sold for nearly $5 million at Sotheby’s Geneva Royal & Noble Jewels Auction on November 13, following a 7-minute bidding war. According to IGI, the necklace comprises three diamond rivières, each ending in tassels, designed for versatility to be worn as a necklace, integrated into hairstyles, or as a dress ornament.

The piece, believed to have been crafted just before the French Revolution, is shrouded in mystery regarding its origins. IGI noted that some speculate it could be connected to the infamous Affair of the Necklace.

The necklace also has ties to royal history, having been worn during the coronations of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. IGI emphasized its blend of historical significance, noble lineage, and craftsmanship as key elements of its allure.
