Gholian, 43, was found dead on February 15, 2017, inside World of Gold N Diamond on Church and Duane streets. According to the New York Post, he had been choked with zip ties and had injuries, including a bruised eye and a head wound. The city medical examiner determined the cause of death was compression of the neck and ruled it a homicide.

Desalles allegedly fled to Mauritius the same day via JFK Airport. He remained there until officials from the U.S. and Mauritius coordinated his arrest and extradition, per the report.

Gholian's family filed a missing persons report after not hearing from him. Police helped a relative enter the locked store, where his body was found in the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The store's closure on Valentine's Day raised concern among neighboring shop owners. Fred Laleh, who runs a nearby business, told The Post he became suspicious when Gholian's shop was closed on a typically busy sales day.

Desalles was arraigned and ordered held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 11.
