Gem Legacy Adds Three Advisory Council Members May 20, 2025 (0 comments)

Royal Oak, MI--Gem Legacy, an East Africa’s artisanal gem mining non-profit, appointed three additional members to its advisory council: Sara Yood, Raja Shah, and Mélanie Matthes.

Gem Legacy said the new members bring legal, commercial and global auction perspectives to the council’s collective expertise, strengthening its ability to connect the jewelry industry with its roots.

“Each of these new members brings a unique lens on the industry,” said Rachel Merisheki, executive director of Gem Legacy. “From law and ethics, to marketing and sourcing, to valuation and impact – their individual perspectives will help us build stronger bridges between the global gem trade and the communities that drive it.”

Sara Yood serves as president, CEO & general counsel of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee. Gem Legacy said “Yood’s expertise will help ensure Gem Legacy advances its leadership in responsible industry engagement.”

Raja Shah, president of Color First, brings decades of experience in colored gemstone marketing and global distribution. “His perspective will support Gem Legacy’s mission through strategic partnerships and insight into shifting consumer preferences.”

Mélanie Matthes, junior specialist at Christie’s Auction House, has knowledge of gem valuation and international auction markets. “Her experience contributes a long-term view of sustainability and legacy in gem sourcing.”

Each of these new members join a roster of current Advisory Council members, including designers, editors, retailers and executives who act as advocates for Gem Legacy’s initiatives and mission to equip, educate and empower mining communities in East Africa.

Gem Legacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to supporting vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community development in East Africa’s artisanal gem mining regions. It was founded in 2018.
