According to a release by GIA, Cowley brings more than 30 years of global financial and operational experience to the position. The institute said he is a Chartered Accountant with a degree in modern history from Oxford University and a law degree from the University of London. Before joining GIA, he served as chief financial officer of Solvd, a California-based software services company.

The release said Cowley had held leadership roles across software, medical technology, nonprofit, and public sector organizations, including work on audit committees and oversight of finance and operations. GIA President and CEO Pritesh Patel said Cowley’s international experience and financial background made him well-suited for the role, according to the announcement.

GIA said Tearle joined the institute in 2009 and served as CFO for 17 years. The release credited him with supporting GIA’s global expansion and the development of laboratory and educational services and programs. It also said he served as a board member and treasurer of the Jewelers Security Alliance from 2013 to 2026.

More details are available on GIA's news release.
