According to the jeweler, a properly fitting ring should slide on and off without difficulty and remain secure without spinning or snagging. Changes in weight, age, health, or climate can affect ring fit over time, causing a ring to feel too tight or too loose.
Signs that resizing may be needed include spinning or shifting during wear, deep marks on the skin, visible gaps between the ring and finger, swelling or tingling, difficulty removing the ring without soap or lotion, soreness after wear, and increased tightness in warm weather. Poor fit can increase the risk of loss or damage.
The company also points to wear-related issues, particularly in rings worn daily, such as engagement rings and wedding bands. Common problems include thinned bands, discolored metal, loose settings, bent prongs, and missing stones.
Hannoush Jewelers lists typical repairs as prong tightening or replacement, metal polishing or rhodium re-plating for white gold, soldering cracks or reinforcing weakened bands, and replacing damaged or lost stones.
The jeweler notes that some conditions require more than resizing, including discoloration, worn or missing prongs, cracks, and surface wear that compromise a ring's structure.
Before a repair or resizing appointment, Hannoush Jewelers recommends regular cleaning, periodic inspection of prongs and settings, and annual professional cleanings with inspections. The company also notes that not all rings can be resized, as materials such as titanium or tungsten and designs with stones around the full band may limit options. For rings with extensive damage, remaking the piece may be recommended.
