Chicago, IL--A judge ordered Muhammad Thomas, 35, detained until trial on first-degree murder and armed robbery charges for the November 8 killings of Faustino Alamo, 63, and Luis Angel Alamo, 25. Thomas made his first court appearance on Tuesday following a prior medical delay.

According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors presented extensive evidence linking Thomas to the fatal shootings outside the victims' Little Village jewelry store. The report noted that authorities recovered DNA, fingerprints from a torched getaway vehicle, smartphone location data, and surveillance footage. Handguns matching bullet casings from the crime scene were also found during Thomas's arrest in St. Louis.
As stated in the publication, Thomas allegedly blocked the store's door with a cellphone to flee with stolen jewelry. When the victims pursued him, a shootout ensued. Prosecutors allege Thomas's juvenile nephew, who was in the getaway vehicle, shot Faustino Alamo, though he has not yet been charged, as reported by the outlet.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Thomas was on pretrial release during the incident and faces three additional felony cases dating back to 2023. Citing him as a threat to the community, Judge Rivanda Doss Beal approved his pre-trial detention. Thomas is scheduled to return to court later this month.
