Let’s Talk Jewelry Store Design: 11 Residential Design Elements That Build BusinessDecember 23, 2020 (0 comments)
|West Bloomfield, MI--One of my first questions when meeting with a new design client is: "What residential design elements would you like to bring into your store?"
Answers vary from a full-length mirror so clients can see the jewelry on their entire body to a fireplace; as well as, artwork that they love. There are so many residential elements that I cannot list them all.
Spaces that capture that homey feeling draw people in and can help people feel more comfortable and relaxed in your store. How do you pull this off for your clients in a jewelry store?
Here is a list of 11 design elements that can help you with a residential look:
- Plush textiles and upholstery in the waiting area
- An artwork statement
- Greenery that brings the nature inside
- Decorative lighting such as chandeliers, sconces, floor lamps, tall lamps on the POS
- Fun accessories such an art piece on the POS, hard cover books on the waiting cocktail table along with candles, etc.
- Color and Texture such as using contrasting textures and paint to add visually interesting layers to the designs in some areas of your store
- An informal waiting area which reminds your clients of their cozy home living area
- Warm building materials such as brick walls, wood, or metals are all a feeling of warmth that the clients might have in their home
- Fireplace placed with the waiting area is very popular. I have designed many fireplaces in the newer designs that I have completed (See Williams Jewelers, Englewood, Colorado)
- Bars are another popular added feature that you will see in the newer jewelry stores. I have designed many bars in the stores and the owners serve gourmet coffee in the morning and then in the afternoon, they offer a glass of beer, wine, or a cocktail. The exciting elements of bars are that the jewelry is protected below the glass while the clients enjoy their drink (Welling Company Jewelers, West Chester, Ohio)
- Tech Bars are evolving in the design world. I have designed a tech bar that the clients view a variety of jewelry. Usually once the client touches the screen, the first 30 seconds are special jewelry ads. Also, the clients use the computer as they wish (Simon & Son Jewelers Huntington Beach, California)

Interior design times are changing in the jewelry industry. Today, we are seeing the design lines blur more and more between residential and commercial, as my clients now realize the compelling, unique power of capturing the "comfortable feeling" through store design.
