LUXURY WATCH COMPANIES RAISE $6 MILLION FOR MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY October 12, 2011 (0 comments)
Monaco—Luxury watchmakers raised more than $6 million to benefit research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, at the 2011 Only Watch auction held here in September. The total this year was nearly double the last auction, held in 2009. The auction is held every two years at the same time as the Monaco Yacht Show.
An article in LuxuryDaily.com said the highest-grossing watch—bringing in $1.8 million—was a Patek Philippe special edition watch (above left) created specifically for the auction. There were 40 lots in the auction, which went on an 11-country world tour prior to being auctioned off. The tour stopped in Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Milan, and Geneva before ending in Monaco.
Other brands offering exclusive timepieces for the auction included Audemars Piguet, Bovet, Breguet, Chanel, Chopard, DeWitt, Girard-Perregaux, Harry Winston, Hermés, Hublot, Lousi Vuitton, Montblanc, Piaget, Tag Heuer, Ulysse Nardin, and Van Cleef & Arpels.
The auction was organized by Antiquorum Geneva, the Monaco Yacht Show, and Association Monegasque Contre les Myopathies, which was founded in 2001 with the aim of finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Prince Albert of Monaco has been a supporter of the foundation since its inception.
