According to a Recorder report, starting as a janitor and mail delivery boy, Horowitz soon found himself drawn to jewelry-making when Floyd Bookout, a jeweler at Robert's, encouraged him to try sizing a ring. That moment sparked the beginning of an apprenticeship for Horowitz, and he immersed himself in the jewelry world.
Following a two-year stint at Robert's, Horowitz transitioned to a full-time position. At 19, he moved to the Bay Area to manage Kay's Jewelers and earned a graduate degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Designing and creating jewelry has been the "fun part of the job" for Horowitz, who discovered an innate talent for the craft early on. Trained in traditional hand fabrication methods, he is a true artist in his field.
As per the report, his passion led him to open his shop at 30, with already 15 years of experience. The business started in his garage in Porterville in 1984 and soon expanded to a storefront on N. Main Street in 1991. The store moved to its current location at 175 N. Main in 1996.
Fast forward to 2023, the Horowitz Jewelry shop has become a mainstay on Main Street, with a steady stream of customers who come for their variety of offerings - from purchasing important jewels to replacing watch batteries to jewelry appraisals.
The report noted that the family-run business includes his wife Johanna's decorations enhancing the store's appearance and their son Jonathan co-owning the business. The store, celebrated for its journey and service to the community, is hosting a sale to commemorate its anniversary.
