According to the post, chlorine and saltwater can weaken metals and loosen gemstones. Sweat and sunscreen can also cause buildup, dulling the appearance of gold and gemstones. The jeweler recommends cleaning pieces with mild soap and a soft brush to prevent long-term damage.
The post also cautions against wearing rings and bracelets during hikes, beach outings, or gardening, as these activities can lead to snags or scratches. Jewelry should be stored securely—ideally not in towels or loosely packed bags.
For travel, Marthaler recommends using a designated case, preferably a zippered one, to prevent damage in transit.
