As per a report by City A.M., the Calatrava Travel Time is a sophisticated global traveler's watch, featuring a cerulean color, precious metal, and bold typography. The Swiss watchmaker has previously used 24-hour read-outs, such as with the 'Chronometro Gondolo' watches in the early 20th century for Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau.
The report notes that in the new Reference 5224R-001, Patek Philippe's design team modernized the unconventional 24-hour indication by placing noon at 12 o'clock instead of the usual 6 o'clock. Although it requires some adjustment, the 24-hour display is easily readable.
Per the report, with technical challenges to overcome due to limited space, the watchmakers increased the diameter of the hour wheel and made other necessary modifications. The self-winding calibre 31-260 PS FUS 24H movement, powered by a platinum micro-rotor, is visible through a transparent sapphire-crystal back.
As per City A.M. report, Patek Philippe also innovated by replacing traditional correction pushers for the secondary 'local' hours hand with a patented correction system using the crown. This change preserves the watch's sleek design.
The Patek Philippe Ref. 5224R is available in rose gold on calfskin leather with a nubuck finish for £46,190 at Patek’s website.
