Tempe, AZ--James “Randy” Coffin, cofounder of Coffin & Trout Fine Jdewelry and a respected figure in the Arizona jewelry community, passed away on April 28 at the age of 68. According to Dignity Memorial, he died peacefully following a battle with brain cancer, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on May 30, 1956, Coffin is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a longtime follower of the Christian faith. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol; his mother, Pauline; his children, Ryan and Megan; his four grandchildren; and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, James, and brother, Bob.
Per the obituary published by Dignity Memorial, Coffin began his career in 1975 as a bench jeweler and went on to cofound Coffin & Trout in 1984. Under his leadership, the business became one of Arizona’s leading fine jewelry houses, recognized for its craftsmanship and client-centered approach. Coffin was noted for his emphasis on respect and creating heirloom-quality pieces.
Coffin was actively involved in his local community. He served on the board of the Tempe Diablos, supporting youth, education, and charitable causes. As noted in the post, he was also a dedicated fan of Arizona State University, the Phoenix Suns, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Outside his professional life, Coffin was passionate about cars, organizing a long-running car show. He also enjoyed fly fishing, golf, cooking, and card games—activities often shared with family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on May 17 at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Nazarene Church in Tempe. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to The Ivy Brain Tumor Center to support glioblastoma research.
