New York, NY--A rare purple diamond discovery in Canada and record auction sales are putting fancy colour diamonds in the spotlight, according to a news release by the Natural Diamond Council (NDC).

The Fancy Colour Diamond Report, produced with Choron Group and the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), highlights a significant find at Canada’s Diavik mine, described as one of the most notable in recent years. The release also noted the nearly $14 million sale of the 10.38-carat Marie-Thérèse Pink diamond at Christie’s New York in June and a fancy pink diamond ring estimated at $1.5–2 million sold at Sotheby’s.

Fancy colour diamond prices have risen steadily, growing 205% since 2005, with pink diamonds up 393.5%, blue up 242.4%, and yellow up 49.3%, per the release. “While global trade anxieties have created caution across luxury sectors, the fancy colour diamond market remained impressively composed,” said Roy Safit, CEO of the FCRF.

Among the rarest colours are red, pink, blue, and green diamonds. Only a few red diamonds over two carats are known to exist, the release stated.

Major sources of fancy colour diamonds include mines in Canada, Botswana, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Australia. Despite accounting for a small share of diamond production, they continue to attract strong interest at auctions and among collectors.
