THE GOLDEN GLOBES: TOP JEWELRY TRENDS YOU CAN REALLY SELL |  January 16, 2013 (0 comments)

Beverly Hills, CA—At Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards, the news was not only about the winners but also about the jewelry. After a disappointingly restrained showing at the Oscars last year, jewelry made a welcome reappearance on the red carpet. Best of all, we saw a number of luxury jewelry trends that are very wearable for mere mortals in real life, and we also saw a return of the necklace, a category that seemed all but banished last year. (See Jessica Alba's Harry Winston stunner at left.)

Perhaps one can correlate the re-appearance of red-carpet jewelry with the improved economy. It’s been a slow climb but all the signs are pointing up and people are feeling better, and now it seems the stars are donning their “happy” looks with playful colored gems and bigger-than-life diamonds. Or perhaps we’re just getting tired of all that restraint and it’s time to cut loose again. Either way, it’s welcome news for jewelry lovers.

Who wore the costliest baubles? Here’s a report detailing the value of the various bits of bling, from the blog Fashionista.com. Voted “most likely to need a bodyguard” was Kelly Osbourne, whose Jacob & Co. emerald earrings were worth a reputed $3 million and were, in fact, accompanied by a bodyguard according to Fashionista.com. But that was topped by the $5.8 million Harry Winston necklace worn by Jessica Alba and shown at the top of this page (yes, the same Harry Winston that was just bought by plastic watchmaker Swatch Group)--and Sofia Vergara’s $8 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds.

We assume it's the rings, because there's no other evidence of the $8 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds Sofia Vergara was wearing at the Golden Globe Awards.

Some key takeaways from the Golden Globes: 1) the drop earring; 2) do it up but don’t overdo it; 3) it’s easy being green because when Pantone speaks, people listen and we saw lots and lots of emeralds, dubbed the Color of the Year for 2013.

Here’s how to do it up without overdoing it, a la Hollywood: if you’re wearing a statement earring, skip the necklace (but play up the rings or bracelets!); if you’re wearing a massive neckpiece, take the earrings down, preferably to a stud. Likewise, a massive bracelet calls for a modest ring; a knuckle-buster ring stands out best when the bracelet is worn small or not at all.

Julianne Moore, left, does it right: Statement earrings and a statement bracelet but nothing else to detract. Co-host Amy Poehler, right, chose a statement necklace but kept the ear studs discreet. Below, co-host Tina Fey (left) elegantly chose statement earrings and gorgeous hair as her only adornment because her busy patterned dress (right) would have made more jewelry a case of overkill.

Here are some more key Golden Globe looks from names you know:

Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez wore Le Vian’s trademarked 14K Honey Gold rings with Vanilla and Chocolate diamonds; 14K Strawberry Gold flower ring with Vanilla and Chocolate Diamonds; and 18K Strawberry Gold earrings with Vanilla diamonds.

J. Lo in Le Vian.

Actress Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) wore Ritani for Forevermark Forevermark Diamond Double Drop Earrings (28.50 ctw), and Ritani for Forevermark Round Diamond Solitaire Ring, 13.44 ctw. Actress Stacy Keibler wore A. Link for Forevermark’s diamond Deco line earrings and diamond three-row lattice band, both set in 18k white gold. She also wore a Forevermark brand emerald cut diamond ring set in 18k white gold. Actress Hayden Panettiere (Nominated for Nashville) wore Rahaminov for Forevermark jewelry. She chose “The Center of My Universe” diamond halo pendant set in 18k white gold, diamond double drop halo earrings set in 18k white gold, a diamond three-stone halo ring set in 18k white gold, and both three-stone and single Center of My Universe diamond bangles set in 18k white and yellow gold.

Hayden Panettiere, above left, wore a Center of My Universe halo pendant and earrings by Rahaminov, and Jacki Weaver, right, wore Ritani for Forevermark double diamond drop earrings. Note also the choice of earrings but no necklace on Weaver, and while Panettiere wore both (earrings below left), plus the Forevermark branded bangles below right, she kept things in check with dimunitive proportions.

Likewise, Stacy Keibler, below, wore A. Link for Forevermark diamond deco line earrings--but no necklace.

The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik wore platinum and diamond morganite drop earrings by Erica Courtney. The Big Bang Theory was nominated for the Best Television Series-Comedy or Musical award.

Color does the trick for Mayim Bialik, left, in Erica Courtney earrings, and Kelly Osbourne, right, who wore purple hair and green emeralds from Jacob & Co. Take note of Bialik's dress, as well as Moore's, Lopez's, and, below, Michelle Dockery's. Though Bialik as an Orthodox Jew routinely eschews bare fashions, these dresses, coupled with the wedding gowns of the real Duchess of Cambridge and the fictional Lady Mary Crawley, are starting to smell like a trend toward more modest coverage for formal events.

Green with envy: E!’s Kelly Osbourne accented her own blue hair with Jacob & Co.’s emerald jewelry featuring more than 140 carats of emeralds. The Fashion Police host selected emerald drop earrings and Colombian emerald ring, showcasing an emerald cushion cut center stone surrounded by 9 carats of white pear and round cut diamonds.

When Pantone speaks, people listen: Emerald is the Color of the Year for 2013, and Kelly Osbourne complied with these emeralds by Jacob & Co. for her Golden Globes appearance. They came with their own bodyguard.

It Brit Michelle Dockery, below left, nominated for her role as Lady Mary in PBS’ Downton Abbey, added a slightly vintage touch (of course) in gold and emerald drop earrings from Bvlgari. Meanwhile, Alison Pill, below right, sparkled in palladium jewelry. She wore palladium fluted earrings with diamonds by Erik Stewart and the palladium circular ring with diamonds by Sholdt.

What the boys wore. Red carpet dressing is no longer just about the ladies. Now men are asking stylists for a little help in jazzing up their tuxedos—they’re donning accessories, not just being the accessory. Jason Kennedy, from E! News, and Billy Bush, from Access Hollywood, led the way as they greeted Golden Globe attendees wearing Edward Mirell titanium cuff links.

Fashion conscious actors like Antonio Cupa, Jai Rodriguez, Jay Hector, Michael Steger, and many more were also seen in contemporary metal bracelets and cuff links, some adorned with diamonds or accented in silver or gold. And E! red carpet host George Kotsiopoulos proved that diamonds on men are not just for mobsters anymore. He wore a Forevermark The Center of My Universe custom-designed diamond halo tie pin set in 18k white gold.

And then there were the afterparties. New Girl star Hannah Simone, below top left, chose a pair of brilliant cut diamond stud earrings (5 carats) surrounded by micro pave white diamonds set in platinum, and a flower cocktail ring with rose cut diamonds (below top right), both Jacob & Co., for the 14th Annual Warner Bros. and InStyle Golden Globe After Party, and actress Julie Benz, below bottom left, wore Le Vian’s 18k Chocolate Gold ring with Vanilla diamonds, below bottom right, to that same bash.
