Randolph, NJ—You don’t have to be a news junkie to know that guns are one of the biggest political hot buttons in the United States. But, as A Timely Perspective reports, watchmaker Fonderie 47 has taken a different approach: the five-year-old company is using melted down AK-47 rifles to make parts for its timepieces. The 47 in its name even is a reference to the weapon, which the company gets from African warzones and melts down in a quest for peace on the continent. To date, 30,000 of the weapons have been melted down in the hopes of keeping them out of the hands of rebels.

Funds from the sale of Fonderie 47 watches are used for the removal and destruction of the assault weapons in Africa.
