Being a part of a marketing agency has given me the opportunity to see the inner workings of many small businesses over the past many years.

I’ve seen big businesses fail who were supposed to be incredibly successful. I’ve also seen bad brands become incredibly successful who were supposed to fail.

What causes this?

In my opinion, the biggest factor to a business’ success is who your partners are.

I’m not just talking about which marketing agency you choose. I also mean who your primary business partners are, who your vendors are, and anyone else you rely on for your business.

Anyone you rely on has the chance to make or break your business in some way. 

Finding good people is difficult. There are a lot of jabronis out there looking to take advantage or who simply don’t possess the skills to do the job properly.

Luckily, there are usually also many skilled, motivated people ready to replace the people who aren’t working out.

When there is smoke, there is usually fire. Trust your gut and don’t waste weeks, months, or even years working with a partner or vendor who doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain. If you see red flags - especially early in your relationship - trust your gut.
