Syracuse, NY—Everyone expects a luxury jeweler to go above and beyond to help a couple celebrate their engagement. Jewelers have been known to help a nervous groom craft a proposal, and sometimes even to deliver the ring in person at the last minute.

But how many jewelers actually perform the wedding ceremony for the couple?

At M. Lemp Jewelers, that’s exactly what happened 15 days ago! Marc Currier and Tracy Maslak of Syracuse tied the knot at a very special moment: 12:12 p.m. on December 12, 2012, inside M. Lemp Jewelers. George Betts, a manager and buyer at M. Lemp, also is a justice of the peace in Elbridge, NY, and he performed the ceremony. A hastily printed sign taped to Lemp’s front door read, “Please Enter Quietly: Wedding in Progress.”

"They're just the nicest people. Very down to earth," says owner Don Lemp. The couple weren't originally Lemp customers, but that's ok with the jeweler. "It's not always about getting a customer," he says.

So how did they end up getting married in a jewelry store where they didn't buy their rings? It was because they specifically wanted Betts to perform the ceremony, says Lemp. But since the appointed moment was smack in the middle of a jeweler's busy work day, Betts suggested to Lemp that the couple come to the store and he would marry them there. Lemp thought it was a great idea, so the couple and their families came to celebrate.

It was a second marriage for both Currier and Maslak, but it was the first wedding ever to be held inside the 122-year-old jewelry store. Lemp told The Centurion that it's also probably the first wedding in a jewelry store ever to happen in Syracuse. He added that that while many couples begin the first step of their lives together at the store--and they've provided wedding and engagement rings to thousands of couples over the years--it was especially rewarding to be part of the nuptials.

Lemp thought it was an interesting news story, and called a friend of his at one of the local TV stations to tell him about it. As a result, the wedding made local news on multiple media outlets, both TV and print, in Syracuse. Watch here and here or check out M. Lemp Jewelers’ Facebook page.
