According to the report, necklaces are the most commonly left-behind items, followed by earrings and bracelets. Earrings are the most frequently lost, with beaches and hotel rooms cited as the top locations. Nearly half of those who lost jewelry while traveling reported it occurred more than twice.
Theft remains a persistent issue. The most frequently stolen items are earrings, necklaces, and wedding rings, often from hotel rooms and restaurants.
To reduce risk, 80% of surveyed travelers now wear “travel jewelry”—lower-value pieces designated for travel. This trend is most common among women and younger travelers.
Earrings are also the jewelry items most purchased during travel. Over half of respondents prefer to buy from established retail stores, and 87% report choosing familiar brands at least some of the time.
The study noted that travelers with dedicated jewelry insurance are likelier to take precautionary steps, including secure storage practices.
The survey was conducted in February 2025 through Qualtrics, with over 1,500 U.S. adults aged 20+ owning fine jewelry and responsible for insurance decisions.
