Randolph, NJ—A fine watch is, ahem, a timeless gift for Father’s Day or the new graduate in your family. Sure, he can whip out a smart phone to check the time, but a watch says so much more about his style.
Sports watches have been edging out dress watches as men’s wardrobe essentials for quite a few years, says Roberta Naas, founder and editor of ATimelyPerspective.com. She offers some tips to help the customer seeking a watch gift, such as:

- Steel details: look for 316L surgical-grade steel for maximum durability.
- Quartz or mechanical? This is rarely a decision for low-end watches, but above the first two to three hundred dollars, quartz watches are of course generally less expensive than their mechanical counterparts.
- The dial: Luminosity features can be handy for a guy who’s out at night or active in sports.
