Centurion Emerging Design Winner Nabs Prize In Basel

Basel, Switzerland—Stanislav Drokin, one of the three winners of the 2014 Centurion Emerging Designer Competition, was named as an award winner in the Solidscape Baselworld 2014 Design Competition.

Solidscape is a leading manufacturer of high-precision 3-D wax printers for the jewelry industry and sponsor of the Baselworld Design Competition. Drokin, of Kharkiv, Ukraine, tied for the Gold prize with his Frog ring (left), a whimsical creation that features an articulated, moveable mouth and is executed in precious metals and gems.

Capturing the Platinum Grand Award for the second year in a row is the OG-Art Studio team from Bialystok, Poland. Their winning design was a platinum horse head pendant, a classically executed design featuring minute detail requiring the highest precision in 3D printing and casting excellence.

Tied with Drokin for the Gold Award is Alain Dinant of Bordeaux, France, for a cigarette holder in a classic bust design that evokes an 18th century ship’s figurehead.

The Silver Award resulted in another tie, between Ananya Chauchangleg of Bangkok, Thailand, who captured the natural beauty of three elephants in a complex, yet organic, ring created in gold and featuring precious stones. The other Silver Award design went to Remus Covriga of Canada for an earring design in multiple precious metals and stones that required extreme precision in 3D printing for the very thin walls and patterns.

Although a winner of the Centurion Emerging Designer competition, Drokin was unable to attend the show in person due to U.S. visa complications at the time of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Alpina Launches Alpiner 4; Reintroduction of Iconic Watch

Geneva, Switzerland—Alpina, a pioneer in creating the modern Swiss sports watch, introduced the first “Alpina 4” in 1938. The concept behind the Alpina 4 was to combine the four essential features for a watch to be called a sports watch in one single case: anti-magnetic, anti-shock, water resistant, and stainless steel. Alpina founder Gottlieb Hauser felt a watch needed all four elements to be able to tackle the entire vertical Alpine sports environment, from mountain climbing to alpine lake diving.

The new Alpiner 4 pays homage to its 1938 predecessor.

Alpina this year revives the Alpina “4” concept with its new “Alpiner 4” collection dedicated to the Alpine sports universe. The all-new Alpiner 4 collection features a “Bi-Compax” chronograph, encasing the well-known Alpina AL-860 Automatic Chronograph movement, and an automatic GMT model encasing the new Alpina AL-550 GMT movement, featuring an in-house GMT/24H module.
