New Mini Spectrometer Detects Synthetic Diamonds Without A Lab
Hong Kong—Diamond Services Ltd. has developed a mini Raman Spectrometer that can accurately detect HPHT and CVD lab-grown synthetic diamonds, HPHT color-treated diamonds, and diamond simulants in a company’s own office, without sending the stones to a gem lab. The desktop-sized device, which will be unveiled at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair in September, has been designed specifically for non-technical personnel to operate, and is able to test both mounted and non-mounted stones. It will cost up to 90% less than the equivalent Raman Spectrometer systems used by the leading gem labs, says its maker.
"We believe that the new system is a game changer," said Joseph Kuzi, Diamond Services' founder and president. "To date, diamond and jewelry companies have had to rely on methods that screen out stones that are more likely to be treated or synthetic, but they then need to refer them properly equipped laboratories for definitive testing.”
The mini Raman Spectrometer will enable them to conclusively identify such goods on the spot, he says, adding that with a growing number of undisclosed treated and synthetic diamonds in the market, it allows faster business decisions without increasing risk.
Diamond Services also offers the DiamaPen, a hand-held laser device that is able to detect fancy color synthetic diamonds, and the DiamaTest that screens both loose and colorless diamonds for synthetics; that device won a prestigious JNA Award in 2014.
