Birmingham, AL—The oldest family-owned and operated retailer in the United States is—not surprisingly—a jeweler. Alabama jeweler Bromberg’s was feted by WTVM 13 News, the local NBC affiliate in Birmingham.

Ricky Bromberg (top image), the sixth-generation president, told the story of how the store came to be where it is today. The original Bromberg’s opened in Mobile in 1836, but Ricky’s great-grandfather, the third-generation owner, decided to open a second location in Birmingham 64 years later. Over time, demographics shifted and today the jeweler is located only in Birmingham, with two stores in the area.

“We’re in the business of selling life’s happiest occasions,” Ricky Bromberg told WTVM. “Being a part of the city is just part of our DNA.”

Bromberg’s is an AGS jeweler, Rolex dealer, and one of the few jewelers that still offers tableware for a bridal registry.
