Merrick, NY—While the spring jewelry shows are still months away, and consumers have barely begun wearing their fall/winter wardrobes, trend forecasters are looking ahead well in advance to identify the color and design trends most likely to influence both apparel and accessories for spring/summer 2014 and 2015. Style and design trends don’t happen in a vacuum—think about how often the same colors and themes crop up in home accessories as jewelry—so at least some of these trends are likely to influence fine jewelry as well. Examples of how it could inspire fine jewelry include cool water-hued gems, textures reminiscent of sand or waves, soft or flowing shapes, or even literal interpretations like starfish or sea creatures rendered in precious metal and gems.

According to Isham Sardouk, chief creative officer for SVP Forecasting and author of StyleSight’s Megatrends report, the ocean plays a major role in design inspiration for spring/summer 2014. Blue will take prominence as a color trend, reflecting that interest, and complementing colors like turquoise also will reflect elements of the ocean. The green of algae and bright yellow of plankton will be important colors as well. For those who prefer reds and pinks, think coral in its different shades from pale to intense.

Textures also will evoke a sense of the ocean, from wave patterns to tentacle textures to the smooth surface of a shell, while prints will incorporate both organic shapes created by flowing water and more literal representations of sea creatures and treasures.

Footwear often will feature straps spiraling the foot, and jewelry, says Sardouk, will be inspired by treasures from the sea. Look for bags and other shapes to get more amorphous, organic, and bulbous, like a jellyfish or squid.

Stylesight also has released its predictions for the key colors of early 2015. They are: chartreuse, inky midnight blue, golden sun (gold tones, not yellow), classic greys, and purple-based berry colors.
