Merrick, NY—It’s never easy to find just the right person to join your staff, no matter what capacity. There are local employment agencies, national jewelry staffers, and want ads in various media to help, but there’s also a tried-and-true method: hire your good customers and make them into even better salespeople. Many jewelers have had luck with this method and continue to do so.

While one of these more traditional methods might pay off, you might consider a few non-traditional approaches that could net your next best employee. Here are a few outside-the-box ideas to consider:

Add a ‘Help Wanted’ button to your website. Post open positions and job descriptions where they are easy to find. More here: Creative Ways to Recruit New Talent

Hand out ‘recruiting cards.’ Hand them out to any potential employee, no matter where they are. Offer them to all your employees as well to hand out. Include your company name, website and contact info and “Now Hiring” on one side. On the other? Something along the lines of “_______ said I was a real gem,” where _________ is the name of the referring person. Other interesting ideas here:  5 Unique Recruiting Ideas That Paid Off Big Time

Check alumni networks of trade orgs (GIA, JA, WJA, AGS, etc.) as well as local colleges for potential employees. Go to the next meeting and hand out cards and flyers.

Connect with your networks. Remember Facebook and Linked-In, both for recruiting and hiring. Put the word out on both networks and see what – or rather who – comes in. It’s highly likely you might have a friend of a friend with a great referral. More here: 18 Creative Ways to Find Employees

Above all, don’t forget to reward employee referrals. You employees likely know someone who will fit in nicely at your business. Offer them rewards for finding the right person – an iPad, a long weekend away, a favorite piece of jewelry, or a plain old cash bonus.
