Dome Ceilings Get You Upscale Look, Uniqueness, More Light Fixture Space: McGwire |  November 25, 2021 (0 comments)

West Bloomfield, MI--When remodeling or starting new building construction, clients often ask me about the use of a unique ceiling to impress their customers. My response is that while dome ceilings are typically a little more expensive than a basic 2” x 2” tile ceiling, it is worth allocating money for in the budget because dome ceilings give an upscale feel to the store.

Often times, the feel of curved dome ceilings increases the height of the room and also allows for a larger light fixture.

Dome ceilings are the ultimate break from traditional ceiling tiles seen in most retail stores. See the picture of Buchkosky Jewelers, Roseville, WI below, where I designed the dome above the center of the jewelry cases with a beautiful chandelier overhead. The one pictured is illuminated by an LED light ring, surrounded by recessed lighting in the drop down drywall ceiling. This is the kind of stunning architectural ceiling design that can wow your customers.

Popular Over Diamond Sales Area

The most popular places for an architectural dome ceiling are above the diamond selling areas, point of sale, or an area of the store to which the owner wishes to draw attention to. See the picture below from Lasker Jewelers, Eau Claire, WI. I designed the chandelier to go into the center of the dome ceiling. The size of this dome is very large, which compliments the size of the large jewelry store.

One might think that dome ceiling projects are an expensive undertaking, but in fact, that’s not always the case. With an architectural dome ceiling, kits are sold to general contractors who can install them in almost any ceiling as long as there is 15”-18” space above the finished ceiling. Many of my clients have purchased a dome kit from Outwater Industries for less than $400.00. The dome that I am referring to is called the “Wilton Dome” and it is 40” diameter round (#98520 model number). The ceiling space above the ceiling line you need is 7-1/4”. See a photograph of the Wilton Dome below.

The material is fiberglass and is super lightweight. The “Wilton Dome” is only 10lbs. These domes are all paintable. I did a design that had gold as the accent color and painted the dome inside the same color gold and it turned out just beautiful.
