According to NPR, the group—dubbed the “grandpa robbers” due to their ages, mostly in their 60s and 70s—received prison sentences ranging from 3 to 8 years. The court issued lighter sentences than those sought by prosecutors.
Aomar Aït Khedache, 69, identified as the ringleader and the individual who held Kardashian at gunpoint, was sentenced to 8 years, with 5 years suspended. Khedache is deaf and followed the trial using a screen. He apologized in court.
Per the NPR report, the robbers posed as police officers to gain access to Kardashian’s apartment during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016. Kardashian was restrained with tape and velcro, and jewelry valued in the millions was stolen. Her $4 million diamond ring remains missing.
Yunice Abbas, 71, who had prior convictions for burglary, was sentenced to 7 years, mostly suspended. Abbas has written a book about the robbery and stated in a pre-trial interview that he did not know Kardashian but was drawn by the unprotected diamond.
The group left DNA evidence at the scene. One member’s getaway bike had a flat tire, and a diamond necklace worth $24,000 was found by a passerby the next day.
According to NPR, lawyer Mohand Ouidja, representing the building’s doorman, said the robbery involved serious violence and should not be dismissed due to the defendants’ ages.
Kardashian briefly testified during the trial but was not present for the verdict. She has described the night as the most traumatic of her life, but later stated on Instagram that she has forgiven the robbers.
