Merrick, NY—When in doubt, Google.

Whether you’re trying to brine a turkey, fix a light switch, or even give eye drops to a cat, it’s likely there’s a video somewhere online that will help you do it. Most of those are housed on YouTube, and were created by people just like you. And many times it’s all you need to answer a simple question.

But if your question isn’t so simple, or you discover that the free advice on YouTube isn’t enough, Google’s new Helpouts site now offers interactive, real-time help from real people. The difference is that not all sessions are free, and you have to both schedule a session and have a webcam to video chat between consumer and expert. Helpouts has more than 1,000 experts vetted so far, in a variety of categories from fashion and beauty to fitness, nutrition, and cooking to electronics and more--but there is nobody offering jewelry advice yet.

Luxury jewelers have long been encouraged to position themselves as expert guest speakers for local civic luncheons and high school science classes, or pen a column for their local paper or be a guest on the radio. This is the same idea, writ larger—in offering your advice to a global community, you can increase your standing as an expert in your own local community.

There is a place on the site to sign up as a provider, and already experts from brands like Sephora, Rosetta Stone, and Weight Watchers have done so. Click here to learn more about the site, and click here to learn how you can become a Helpout provider.
