West Hollywood, CA—Hillary Kerr (image), a 20-year fashion industry veteran and founder of fashion webzine WhoWhatWear, is a firm believer in investing in high-end fine jewelry. In a recent interview, she said, “Fashion trends may come and go, but jewelry is forever.”

While the interview was a Cartier-sponsored advertorial (and of course all the jewelry Kerr sported in accompanying photos was from the brand), her thoughts on fine jewelry, its role in creating a timeless fashion statement for yourself, and its role in female self-purchase, are well worth reading.

In the article, Kerr offers some apparel advice—like why gray is the perfect neutral and her picks for iconic wardrobe pieces—but emphasizes that in the world of what’s truly worth investing in, fashion-wise, jewelry is at the top of the list.

“I would rather invest in a piece of jewelry or a watch than almost anything else. In addition to being a sentimental purchase, these items can truly elevate anything you wear and make your outfit look purposeful and thoughtful. Plus, they hold their value!”

When she first started investing in jewelry, Kerr says she tended to save it for important or formal occasions, but now she wears it every day, no matter what she’s doing.

“If a piece of jewelry puts a smile on your face or makes you feel joyful, why wouldn’t you want to wear it as much as possible?” (While we appreciate the endorsement, there are more than a few occasions when it’s definitely not advisable, like swimming, gardening, cleaning, going to the beach, or renovating a kitchen.)

But Kerr’s advice for getting the look right is exactly on point: “I think it’s all about the mix! Mixing styles, mixing metals, mixing materials—rather than being precious about what “works” together, think about having fun with it. I also think wearing classic jewelry with more casual clothing always looks extremely modern.”
