IN MEMORIAM: BARTON SPERRY SNOW August 24, 2011 (2 comments)
Birmingham, AL--Barton Sperry Snow, co-founder of Barton-Clay Jewelers in Mountain Brook, AL, died suddenly on August 17. He was 63.
He was known for his smile and his skills as a jewelry salesman, said a tribute blog in the Birmingham News. He also will be remembered for his support of many charitable causes, such as the Shades Valley Rotary Club, Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce, St. Vincent's Foundation, Children’s Harbor, Jacksonville State University, multiple cancer fund-raising events, and more.
Steve C. Hydinger , president of the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce, called Snow a real leader in the community. In addition to his generosity with many charities, Snow also gave of his time: he served on the boards of St. Vincent’s, Children’s Harbor, and the Jacksonville State University Foundation.
"He was always willing to help with a good attitude and a smile," Hydinger told the News.
"He was a wonderful man," said Charles Bennett, a sales associate at Barton-Clay.
Snow and Barton-Clay co-founder Eric Clay McClain had worked together at another jewelry company in Birmingham for 15 years; Snow as a store manager and McClain as a jeweler. They left and founded the store bearing their names in 1987.
Snow was born in Birmingham on March 11, 1948. He attended Shades Valley High School and graduated with a degree in political science from Jacksonville State University. A veteran, Snow proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps after college.
Snow was preceded in death by his parents, Barton E. Snow and Lucille Lawson Snow of Cahaba Heights, AL, and his infant sister, Nancy. He is survived by his daughter, Carrie Snow Cearlock, son-in-law Jim Cearlock, two grandsons, James Lawson Cearlock and Hudson Ethridge Cearlock; two brothers, C. Kendall Snow and Robert Lawson Snow, sister-in-law Linda Snow, and many other family members and friends.
