In Memoriam: NC Jeweler Steve Sugg, Active In AGS And NC JA February 08, 2021 (0 comments)
High Point, NC—Robert Steven “Steve” Sugg, a longtime employee of Perkinson’s Jewelers in High Point, died Jan. 30. He was 74. Image: The High Point Enterprise.
Sugg was married to the former Carolyn Perkinson, daughter of the jewelry store’s founder. The store, which opened in 1932, was a full-line AGS jeweler carrying tabletop and giftware in addition to jewelry. It closed in 2015.
According to The High Point Enterprise, Sugg attended East Carolina University and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was active in both his own community and in the jewelry industry, serving for 20 years on the board of the North Carolina Jewelers’ Association, and also serving as the association’s president. He was a member of the American Gem Society and past president of the North Carolina Guild.
In the local community, he belonged to the High Point Rotary Club, the YMCA Men’s Club, and was on the board of managers for YMCA’s Camp Cheerio for 40 years. He also served as chairman for the High Point Merchants Association for six years and was on the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association Board of Advisors. He was a member of the Emerywood Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by Carolyn in 2011 after 40 years of marriage, Sugg is survived by his son, Steadman (Elizabeth); three grandchildren, Harper, Brooks, and Ellison Sugg; and a niece and nephew.
A private memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to YMCA Camp Cheerio, P.O. Box 62548, High Point, NC 27262.
