INDUSTRY NEWS: GIA SCREENS FOR SMALL SYNTHETICS; PGI PARTNERS WITH MARTHA STEWART WEDDINGS July 04, 2012 (0 comments)
GIA To Offer Synthetic Screening For Smalls
Carlsbad, CA—Following the discovery in May of hundreds of synthetic diamonds mixed into a parcel of small stones submitted to IGI in Antwerp, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has launched its new GIA Diamond Quality Assurance service to randomly screen parcels of smalls for synthetics and color treatments. The program covers stones up to 0.20 ct. for white D to Z or colored diamonds; and up to 0.50 ct. stones for black diamonds, at a cost of $12 per stone.
Both loose and mounted stones will be accepted, though mounted stones may have to be removed from the mounting for testing. GIA will determine whether a stone is natural, natural but treated, or synthetic.
All stones submitted to GIA for grading and identification are routinely scanned for synthetics or treatments.

PGI Partners With Martha Stewart Weddings For Platinum Jewelry Facebook Contest
New York, NY—Platinum Guild International USA announces the launch of a special Facebook promotion in conjunction with Martha Stewart Weddings magazine.
Fans are invited to choose favorites from a photo gallery of more than 80 platinum bridal jewelry designs. Those images that have the most “likes” when voting closes on July 16 will be housed on Martha Stewart Weddings’ website as “Martha Stewart Weddings Fan Favorites.”
The interactive experience allows consumers to directly influence which designs are showcased, offering a personal connection to the selection of platinum jewelry. This program is part of PGI’s ongoing efforts to bring Millennial-age consumers an original, fun, and interactive jewelry experience. Previous programs have included PGI’s “Platinum Promise” application (app) where fans of platinum jewelry were encouraged to virtually “engrave” special promises to loved ones on platinum bands. For the PGI/MSW promotion, users can vote on PGI’s recently re-launched Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/jewelryplatinum.
