Carter was recently honored with the 2024 Robert M. Shipley Award, a recognition from the American Gem Society (AGS) that honors significant service to the organization and the industry. He expressed surprise upon receiving the award, noting that nominees are not informed beforehand.

His association with Jack Lewis Jewelers began in high school. After attending Illinois State University, he returned to the store in 2002 with the prospect of future ownership. In March 2011, he became the third owner, following Jack Lewis and John Wesselink.

Emphasizing the importance of continuing the store's legacy since 1927, Carter said, "This store serves a special role in our community. It has meant a lot to me and meant a lot to John, and certainly to Mr. Lewis, to see that tradition carry on."

Transitioning from employee to owner brought challenges in leadership and staff management. Carter acknowledged initial uncertainties but believed in his potential and the value of surrounding himself with the right people.

Key developments during his tenure include partnering with marketing professional Josh to rebrand the store and focus on engagement rings and bridal jewelry. He also credited his general manager, Missy, with enhancing merchandising and operations.

Carter highlighted the significance of mentorship and industry relationships through the AGS. He stressed the importance of learning from peers and considering perspectives outside the industry.

Community involvement is central to his business approach. Jack Lewis Jewelers frequently donates to local events and organizations. "I take that obligation very personally," he said. "It's truly helping worthwhile causes that benefit our community."

Regarding his staff, Carter focuses on hiring individuals who are aligned with the store's culture of exceptional customer service. He aims to create an environment where employees feel respected and empowered.

He cherishes the role his store plays in customers' significant life events. "Celebrating love is definitely the best part of what we do," he stated.

Looking ahead, Carter mentioned plans to build a new store, signaling continued growth for Jack Lewis Jewelers.
