Just Call Him The Diamond Dog February 18, 2015 (0 comments)

New York, NY—As dog-lovers across the nation watched breathlessly to see who would be crowned as America’s top dog at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in Madison Square Garden Tuesday night, host David Frei regaled TV viewers with a tale guaranteed to make a jeweler cringe.

The owners of Hickory, the Hungarian Visla who won best of breed and advanced to the Sporting Group judging, are jewelers. Maybe they thought a prizewinning dog was above snitching (is any dog above snitching?), but apparently no, even top dogs will be dogs.

Yes, Hickory ate $10,000 worth of loose diamonds the jewelers had left out. The husband of the couple followed him around for a week and was able to recover $8,000 worth of the swallowed gems in predictable fashion. Frei didn’t say how the remaining stones were recovered, but obviously the dog survived his diamond-eating episode and went on to compete successfully in the ring. He didn’t win the big prize, though—a four-year-old beagle named Miss P from British Columbia, Canada, was crowned Best In Show.
