Luxury Retailer Nordstrom Buys Flash Sale Site February 20, 2011 (0 comments)

Seattle, WA—If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em.

The popularity of discount flash sale sites such as Gilt Groupe and Rue La La certainly has made luxury retailers—including jewelers—sit up and take notice. Though these sites typically feature only a few items from a brand’s line, and for a very short time apiece, the idea of scoring a coveted luxury item for a fraction of its usual cost is very appealing to consumers. Shopping may be back in vogue, but shoppers still have a healthy appetite for a bargain.

Some top retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus toyed with the idea of creating flash sale sites of their own, but competitor Nordstrom last week dove in headfirst with the purchase of HauteLook, Women’s Wear Daily reports. (Subscription may be required to access the full WWD article.)
