The award, presented November 6 at Riverside Receptions, honors individuals who have made lasting contributions to Geneva through business, education, civic, or charitable work. Sanchez received a standing ovation when her name was announced.
"I never feel that I've done anything extraordinary, I just like to participate and show up for everyone in town," Sanchez said. "I love it here and I love people here. I'm truly blessed to be in this community."
According to the report, former Chamber board president Scott Lebin described Sanchez as a steady presence in downtown Geneva. "Martha, thank you for leading us by your example – quietly, steadily and always from the heart," he said.
Sanchez has spent more than 50 years in the jewelry business, starting at Anderson Jewelers, later renamed State Street Jewelers. Lebin cited store owner Jeff Hampton, who said, "Anyone who came into the store was either related to Martha, or was known by Martha, or knew someone who knew Martha."
Per the report, Sanchez has volunteered with the Geneva History Museum, CASA Kane County, Fox Valley Food for Health, Anderson Humane, and St. Peter Catholic Church and School. She is vice chair of the Chamber's board and a volunteer at St. Gall Catholic Church in Elburn.
