Toledo, OH--I.M. Jaffe Jewelers will open in December in downtown Perrysburg, bringing back the Jaffe family name to the Toledo-area jewelry business, according to Toledo Free Press.

The store, owned by Ivan and Michelle Jaffe, will occupy the former 1940 U.S. Post Office building at 117 East Second Street. The couple is restoring the property while converting it into a jewelry boutique and community space.

"We both grew up in Perrysburg and thought it was a really cool building," Michelle Jaffe said. "It still has the original artwork on one wall, and the Smithsonian has the rights to it. We're trying to get the building back to what it originally looked like."

Harold Jaffe Jewelers, founded by Ivan’s father in 1946, closed in January 2024 after nearly 80 years in business. Ivan's brother, Jeff Jaffe, retired and announced the closure in a Facebook post, saying the store would sell its $8 million inventory before closing.

"Laurie and I have retired and are living near our kids in the Atlanta area," Jeff Jaffe said in an email, as per the Toledo Free Press report. "We are pleased that Ivan and Michelle are continuing the legacy begun by our dad, Harold, in 1946."

According to the report, Ivan joined the family business in 1976 and became a certified gemologist. Michelle studied jewelry design at Rollins College in Florida and worked in retail before becoming director of admissions there.

The couple said I.M. Jaffe Jewelers will focus on customer participation and education. "Our clients are collaborators," Michelle said, as noted in the report. "We're going to do a lot of hands-on experiences." Customers will be able to take part in jewelry creation, including carving wax and hand engraving.

They said all materials will be sourced responsibly. "We will host community events, design sessions, and educational workshops," Ivan said.

As per the report, restoring the post office building will be a multi-year project. The Jaffes said they hope it will serve as both a jewelry boutique and a community gathering place.
