Irmo, S.C.--Dems Jewelers, a family-owned jewelry store, has announced it will close after 54 years. The owners are retiring, leading to the store's permanent shutdown. The announcement invited the community to a final sale before the closure.

Per a news report in Cola Daily, the store began in 1969 when Barnard Livingston bought it from Reinhardt Dems, a Holocaust survivor and master goldsmith. Steve Livingston, the current owner, said it's time to retire without singling out any specific memories.

Steve Livingston mentioned the strong customer relationships formed over the years, describing customers as friends. As the owners retire, there are plans to lease the store's location at 1068 Lake Murray Blvd to new operators who might continue serving the community. The transition aims to keep the legacy alive through potential new "mom and pop" jewelers, possibly retaining some current staff.

The store is expected to stay open for about two months or until most inventory is sold, with discounts up to 60 percent.
