Owensboro, KY--M&M Jewelers, a family-owned jewelry store that has served Owensboro for close to nine decades, recently closed. Founded by Oscar and Marie Grant in 1937, the store, initially located downtown, was later transferred to their son Craig.

According to a report by Owensboro Times, the iconic store's familiar location was at the corner of 2nd and Allen streets, where it stood for 50 years. However, with broader sidewalks and less parking, Craig Grant decided to sell the building and move the business to KY 54.

“We’ve done well," shared Craig Grant in the report. "We appreciate the many years of patronage. I know I’ll miss it, but at least I have my memories.”

The report noted that the combination of the Covid-19 pandemic, a faltering economy, and diminished foot traffic were cited as the main reasons for the closure. With inventory levels low since Christmas, the remainder is planned to be sold off.

“It’s been a good run, and the community has been great to us,” said Grant, per the report. “I can’t express how much we appreciate the support over the years. It was just time.”

Initially called Grant’s Jewelers, the jewelry store was sold to Kay Jewelers before Marie opened Hollywood Jewelers. The latter was later renamed M&M, a decision influenced by the fact that almost every employee at Hollywood had a name starting with "M." This led to customers often asking, “Which ‘M’ is this?” when they called the store.
