Gulfport, MS--Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry has issued a warning about the rising threat of a "brushing scam," a deceptive tactic targeting unsuspecting recipients of unsolicited packages. While no local cases have been reported, the jeweler aims to raise awareness to prevent potential victimization.

The jeweler noted that the scam involves receiving unexpected packages containing items like rings, bracelets, or electronic devices, often sent via retailers like Amazon. These packages lack sender information but may include a QR code, allegedly to identify the sender. Scanning the code grants scammers access to personal and financial information stored on the victim's phone, potentially leading to significant financial loss.

Recipients are advised to avoid scanning unknown QR codes and to inform family members about the scam. The items received can be kept or discarded, but QR codes should not be interacted with.
