‘Spotlight’ On Oscar JewelryMarch 02, 2016 (0 comments)
|Los Angeles, CA—Even as Spotlight took away the Oscar for Best Picture Sunday night, all our industry’s eyes were on the jewelry. While this year’s winning picture was all about scandal and the lack of ethnic diversity in this year’s Oscar nominees also sparked a cause célèbre much discussed throughout the evening, at least the red carpet was marked by a sense of real elegance in both the gowns and the jewelry. It was a refreshing change from previous years when more than a few actresses—or their stylists—clearly didn’t get the distinction between costume drama and real life.
Once again, Oscar jewelry was mainly about the ear. Elegant drop earrings or classic on-the-ear cluster earrings reigned, and we also saw some interesting trends gain exposure, such as the mismatched emerald, pearl, diamond and jadeite Chopard earrings Best Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan wore with her green sequined Calvin Klein gown, or the Sevan Bicacki handpiece worn by Whoopi Goldberg, or the jeweled barrette that Best Actress winner Brie Larson wove into her simple, pulled-back hair. She paired that with pearl drop earrings from Japanese designer Nikawa.
Newer jewelry trends include mismatched earrings on Saoirse Ronan, left, and a jeweled barrette on Brie Larson, right. Below, Larson paired the barrette with simple pearl drop earrings, while Olivia Wilde sported a pearl choker. (Larson images, Stylebistro; Wilde, Getty.)
Larson wasn’t the only actress sporting pearls on Sunday; most notable, of course, was presenter Olivia Wilde’s Edwardian choker—a style to watch both on and off the red carpet. Edwardian details of Wilde’s lavish piece aside, with fashion’s seemingly eternal fascination with the 1970s the choker is a key look of that era as well.
Most actresses chose to make a statement on either neck or ear, not both. For those that toned down the ear in favor of a necklace, the overwhelming choice—other than Wilde’s choker—was a classic collar, such as Tina Fey’s sapphire and diamond stunner from Bvlgari (top of page). The notable exception was Charlize Theron’s lavish diamond drop pendant filling in her plunging red Dior gown.
Left, Sophie Turner keeps it classic with a collar and teardrop-shape drop earring; right, Charlize Theron takes the plunge with a long diamond pendant necklace.
And you’ve got to hand it: rings were everywhere. Not as visible on camera, but a good way to round out a look when the emphasis is on the neck and ears. That said, there also was no lack of bracelets, most notably the dazzling Forevermark Exceptional Diamond snake cuff wound around Olivia Munn’s wrist. The piece, a one-of-a-kind by Jade Trau for Forevermark, featured a 12.06-ct diamond “head” and was valued above $1 million.
The one actress whose jewelry choice was widely panned was Jennifer Lawrence, who wore a delicate, barely-visible diamond chain from Chopard to accent her Dior gown. But in defense of the piece, while it might not have been visible from 10 feet, it is much more reflective of what real women wear in real life. Her Chopard cocktail ring, however, was visible from afar, and proved that there’s nothing as elegant for evening as a diamond cluster ring done right.
Jennifer Lawrence's delicate diamond necklace might not please red-carpet paparazzi, but the style is much more reflective of what real women are wearing.
